36 in ames and in des moines we're at 39 with most locations across the state are already above freezing. in a more typical december morning, temperatures would only be near 20 degrees so this is a huge improvement over average. and it's going to be an above average day, too. we are expecting sunshine by noon, close to 50 degrees, headed for highs today right around 55. the weather stays quiet the next couple days and it also stays warm. but we've got some change coming in the forecast and we'll need to pull out those warmer coats as we head towards the weekend. eric: today's big stories now, there's new information this morning on a roosevelt basketball coach arrested for sex charges. 46-year-old gerald "tig" johnson turned himself into police tuesday facing charges of assault with the intention to commit a sex act and sexual exploitation by a school employee. the varsity basketball coach returned to roosevelt after a few stints with other schools. the district says it is cooperating with investigation by police and they put johnson

students tell kcci, johnson had a good reputation on campus. >> at first, he's a very popular guy. we all knew him and got along with him and then now, you know , just happened and now we're all shocked. eric: kcci hopes to learn more information from police later this morning. elizabeth: a pleasant hill daycare provider will spend the next five years behind bars after she was caught on video abusing children in her care. we'll show you part of that video now but a warning, it's it is very hard to watch. christina williamson can be seen stepping on a baby's head and shoving a cloth in her mouth and shoving her face in the carpet to stop her from crying. in a deal, williamson pleaded guilty to felony and aggravated misdemeanor child endangerment. parents of the abused children were there for the sentencing tuesday. >> we were inconsolable with guilt, knowing we had unwittingly placed our precious baby girl in the hands of a monster. >> she was afraid of you and i

now i see it and it breaks my heart. elizabeth: we've had more than 150 comments on the sentencing on our kcci facebook page and many expressed disappointment the sentence was only five years. she now has the option to appeal. eric: sentencing is set for today in a man charged in a shooting rampage last year in pleasant hill. in october, pete polson was found guilty on one count of attempted murder and two counts of assault to inflict serious injury. we'll be there and have the results of that sentencing later today on kcci and kcci.com. in webster county, the courthouse will remain closed today after it was vandalized early tuesday morning. officials say the vandals broke in and released fire extinguishers on the third and fourth floors, making a big mess inside. investigators are collecting evidence while crews clean up -- crews work to clean up. officials say they aren't still sure when the courthouse is going to be ready to reopen. and police are asking for

webster county crime stoppers. and today we're going to learn more about the plans for a new $100 million convention center hotel in downtown des moines. the board is set to meet this afternoon to discuss the design, the time line and budget for the new project. the new hotel will be located near fifth and center and include a 10-story, 330-room hotel right next to the iowa event center. eric: this morning the secretary of defense is heading to capitol hill to testify about the fight against isis. shaina humphries is following this for us and the temperature comes at a key time in washington. shaina: it does. secretary carter's visits comes as they work on a major spending bill and is going to urge them to pass a long term bill quickly saying short-term measures hurt the fight against isis. the house passed a waiver bill tuesday aimed at tightening travel restrictions to the u.s. the new bill requires travelers to get a visa if they've gone to countries like iraq and syria in the past five years. the homeland security

with near record highs either side of 60 degrees. but temperatures will be rapidly cooling as we head towards the weekend and next week is looking pretty chilly. we have 30's back in the forecast for high temps. eric: thanks, metinka. right now the air pollution problem in beijing keeps getting worse. the chinese capital issued its first ever red alert for pollution on tuesday. thick, dark smoke just fills the air and has forced much of beijing to shut down. schools and construction sites are closed and driving is restricted. officials say the red alert will remain in effect through thursday. one man in beijing is transforming the air pollution into art. the artist has spent 100 days vacuuming the air pollution particles that people in beijing breathe in daily. during that time he collected more than 100 grabs of the pollution which was enough to make a whole brick. he hopes his project will bring abearness -- awareness to the pollution solution there.

and sexual exploitation by a school employee. we checked overnight and johnson is still in the polk county jail, no bond set. we are expecting to see a police report on the case later today. elizabeth: five years. that's how long a pleasant hill daycare provider will spend behind bars for abusing children in her care. the disturbing abuse was caught on video. >> i'm a human being too, and i have kids and watching that film was just sickening, how you treated those babies. elizabeth: christina williamson told the judge she was sorry for the abuse, which included stepping on a baby girl's head, shoving a cloth in her mouth and shoving her face into the carpet. none of the babies in her care suffered serious physical injuries. sentencing is scheduled today for the man who went on a shooting rampage last year in pleasant hill. jurors found pete polson guilty of attempted murder and assault

polson told jurors he was too high on methamphetamine to form the intent to kill. he does face more than 100 years in prison. we'll be in the courtroom today, so watch for that here on kcci. eric: in newton, the couple arrested for having a bomb in their house has bonded out of jail. the kelsos bailed out just hours after they were arrested and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. authorities found the homemade bomb on monday, just a few blocks from downtown. agents used a robot to detonate the explosive device inside the home. they say the bomb wasn't complete enough to explode. more charges are pending. and webster county officials are asking for your help this morning. if you happened to see anyone outside the courthouse early tuesday, let them know. someone broke in and sprayed two floors with fire extinguishers. the damage so great, the courthouse had to close for cleaning. detectives are also reviewing surveillance video. shaina: developing right now,

elizabeth: and muslims in iowa are speaking out this morning about donald trump's plan to ban other muslims from entering the u.s. cedar rapids shares a long history with people of that faith. muslims from lebanon were early pioneers in industry in the 1800's. the mother mosque in northwest cedar rapids was the first building built specifically as a mosque in all of north america. so to hear a majority party presidential candidate say "close the borders" is distressing. hassan igram: i'm not really going to be too upset about a politician that hopefully has no chance to be elected. now, if he does get elected as president, it says a lot about our country and that's unfortunate. elizabeth: iowa muslims say they're also concerned comments like trump's would encourage people to target members of that faith. shaina: no shortage of people very fired up about this. his ban has been a huge topic on our facebook page for a couple days now, but another story that has you talking this morning is

elizabeth: on the health alert. adhd appears to be on the rise among girls according to a new study from george washington university. researchers say the number of parents who reported that their daughters were diagnosed with the attention-hyperactivity disorder increased 55% during the last eight years. and many patients with type 2 diabetes seem to be getting unnecessary tests. guidelines recommend patients with good blood sugar control get a certain hemoglobin test once or twice a year. but researchers at the mayo clinic found more than half of patients had 3-4 tests a year. the authors say the extra tests are not only financially wasteful but they lead to overtreatment and patient harm. eric: life expectancy in the united states has stalled for three straight years.
